Richard Baxter's 'The Reformed Pastor' is required reading for anyone in or preparing for the Pastorate. I've read it three or four times, alone and in reading groups, and often dip into it. I was delighted to discover last month that the Banner of Truth has produced a 'best of', in the form of excerpts arranged under different titles, and in the format of a 31 day reading plan. So, for example, on day 6 there are penetrating insights on temptation in the ministry, and on day 22 there are directions and thoughts on public prayer. Each day's excerpts runs to just 3-400 words. I'm reading the day's section at the desk at the start and close of each day. There is much to stir, correct and inspire. This little pocket book of 118 pages has Packer's great introduction to The Reformed Pastor and to Baxter, and is just £3.25. I've given copies to my colleagues, and will buy many more for other brothers in the ministry.
Starting tomorrow I'll put in the best of each day for the coming month. Stay tuned!
